Oregon Bill of Sale

If you are buying and selling a car in Oregon, the state requires your complete a Bill of Sale to document the transaction. Two copies must be supplied and completed by the seller in a car transaction. In effect, it acts as the receipt of the sale.

The seller must include the date of the sale, the names and addresses of both parties and a few other pertinent pieces of information. It is recommended to use the Bill of Sale template provided by the Oregon Department of Transportation: http://www.odot.state.or.us/forms/dmv/501.pdf.

The seller is responsible for making two copies, one for themselves and one for the buyer, as well as notifying the DMV. Once they complete this and sign over the car title, their responsibility for the car is over. The buyer is then responsible for registering the vehicle with the state.
