Obtaining Your Oregon Temporary Permit

You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old in order to obtain a temporary permit. When driving with this permit, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver seated in the passenger seat who is at least 21 years old. Once you have turned 16 years old you will be eligible to obtain a probationary drivers license.

You will also need to have completed:

  • Driver training certification
  • 24 hours of classroom instruction
  • Eight hours of behind-the-wheel training
  • Held your temporary permit for at least six months
  • DMV maneuverability and driving test

New drivers will need to take the following tests:

  • Vision test
  • Written test
  • Road test

All these requirements must be met before you will be issued your temporary permit.

Oregon temporary permit applicants will be asked to produce specific documents at the Driver's Examination Station.  You can find and download a complete list of these documents here. Drivers must prove that they are who they state they are, their age, and that they are a current resident of the state of Oregon. To do so, drivers need to bring at least one document from each of the following categories:

Primary Documents (proof of full legal name and date of birth):

  • Birth certificate
  • Certified copy of court order
  • Military ID
  • Driver's license/state ID card
  • Concealed Weapons Permit
  • Valid passport

Secondary Documents (must include social security number if not on primary document):

  • Certified copy of court order
  • Credit card
  • Foreign birth certificate
  • Gun permit
  • Employer identification Card
  • Health Insurance Card
  • Internal Revenue Service or State Tax form
  • Medical records
  • Marriage certificate
  • Social security card
  • Student ID card
  • Voter registration card

If the primary or secondary documents do not provide proof of Oregon residency, then drivers will need to provide it with another document, examples include:

  • Insurance policy
  • Bank statement
  • Income tax return filing
  • Certified copy of court order
  • School records
  • Child support check stub
  • Credit card bill
  • Utility bill
  • Pay check stub

Oregon Learners Permit Fees
To receive your temporary permit package you must pay a $22 fee.
