Change of Name on Oregon Car Registration

Have you recently gotten married, divorced, or had to change your legal name? The Oregon DMV recommends that you change the name on your MD car registration as soon as possible.

Change of Name

You are required to update your vehicle title and registration if your name marriage, divorce, domestic partnership, court order, or otherwise from that shown on the title. By changing the name on your vehicle title, you also change the name on your vehicle registration. There is a name change fee of $77, or $90 if your vehicle is a heavy vehicle (motor vehicles and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating [GVWR] over 26,000 pounds and trailers with a loaded weight over 8,000 pounds).

To apply for a title in your new name you must:

  • Submit the Oregon title
  • Submit an Application for Title and Registration (Form 735-226)
  • Make a statement on the form that you are the same person, such as "Jane Smith and Jane Doe are the same person due to... (marriage, divorce, court order, etc.)." It is also helpful to include your license, permit or ID card number and date of birth.

There is no fee for this type of correction, but DMV will need to do a record look-up to determine whether there was an error. DMV may have issued the title correctly if the difference was a nickname or an initial on the application, versus true name in our customer database.
